Police Use Brutal Force Against Latino Boy For Not Wearing Bike Helmet
Police officers in New Jersey used brutal force against a Latino teen who was riding his bike without a helmet last Sunday afternoon.
"So [New Jersy police] 'protect and serve' our youth...ensuring they ride bicycles with a helmet by beating them down and arresting them? This is a minor. He is a Latino," tweeted community activist Karol Ruiz this past Sunday, posting a disturbing video of police officers using brutal force against a 15-year-old boy.
In the video, the boy's friends watch in horror as police officers, visibly much larger than the child, violently grab him off his bike, body-slam him to the concrete, and handcuff him.
Despite the erosion of public trust in police and recent efforts to reform policing tactics, it seems that officers are unwilling to change their behavior. One officer can even be seen applying pressure to the boy's neck.
So @Rpdnj “protect & serve” our youth by ensuring they ride bicycles with a helmet by beating them down & arresting them? This is a minor. He is Latino. @NewJerseyOAG @GovMurphy @LATINOACTION the investigation needs to start NOW. @RW4BL_ @jnena08 pic.twitter.com/5UYICxCRbO— Karol Ruiz (@KR_KnowUrRights) July 26, 2020
Civil rights organization Ridgewood for Black Liberation, which has been actively posting about the incident on Twitter, is pushing for the officers involved in the incident to be fired.
“These grown men beat a child in front of a group of children riding bicycles, traumatizing each and every one,” Emily Rizzo, an organizer for Ridgewood, told NorthJersey.com.
“This is why we call for defunding the police and funding the community instead. Because clearly, these Ridgewood officers can’t be trusted to so much as respond to youth bike riding on a Sunday without escalating to violence."
