Cypress Hill Will Be 1st Latino Hip-Hop Group To Have A Star On Hollywood Walk Of Fame
'We are proud to honor the first Latino American hip-hop recording group," said Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has just announced that Cypress Hill, "widely regarded as one of the most important hip-hop groups in history," will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, according to a press release.
Cypress Hill's B Real, Sen Dog, DJ Muggs, and Eric "Bobo" Correa aren't strangers to being "first": the crew were also the first Latino hip-hop group to have RIAA certified platinum and multi-platinum albums, and, in 1993, they became the first rap group to have two albums on Billboard 200's Top 10, the self-titled Cypress Hill and Black Sunday, which debuted at number one.
The Grammy-nominated group has sold over 18 million albums worldwide, and been "sampled by everyone from JAY-Z and the Black Eyed Peas to A$AP Rocky and Vic Mensa," paving the way for "contemporary artists like Luis Fosi and Cardi B."
"They have been successful as a group for three decades and we know they will continue their success for many years to come," said Martinez.
Despite their success and touring schedule, the press release notes that:
"Cypress Hill has never forgotten their neighborhood of South Gate and continue to call Los Angeles home." The group supports their community through "scholarship programs and work with organizations like Guns for Goods, a gun buyback program to help get guns off the streets and away from the hands of children, the Wounded Heroes of America, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation."
