“They didn’t keep my sister safe...they're covering up for each other.”
At a press conference this morning, the family confirmed that the newly discovered remains were likely Vanessa's. The confirmation came after law enforcement reported that one of the suspects, a "junior soldier" believed to be Vanessa’s murderer, died by suicide as they attempted to apprehend him.
Another suspect, the ex-wife of a former soldier, is now in custody.
The remains which were uncovered on June 22nd, two months after Vanessa’s disappearance from her base at Fort Hood, have not yet been officially identified by the medical examiner, but Vanessa’s family believes it to be her.
"We believe her remains were found," said the family's lawyer in a press conference this morning. "It's time we fix our system. Women should not be afraid to come forth about sexual harassment."
At the press conference, Vanessa’s family blasted the army for failing the 20-year-old soldier.
“They lied to our faces every single day," Vanessa's sister cried, as tears and sweat poured down her face.
Tearing off her face mask, she shouted, "They didn't respect my sister. They didn’t keep my sister safe. They're always covering up for each other. ...How can this happen at a military base?”
Vanessa's mother was unable to attend. Lupe says she is in bed, on "pills."

The family's confirmation came after one of the suspects in Vanessa's case died by apparent suicide.
"Special Agents...were attempting to locate the junior Soldier from Fort Hood who fled the post late yesterday," said the Army said in a written statement.
"While law enforcement agencies attempted to make contact with the suspect, the suspect reportedly displayed a weapon and took his own life.”
The suspect’s name has yet to be released, pending notification of his next of kin.
Authorities say they believe him to be the murderer.
Meanwhile, two other suspects have been taken into custody. One has been identified by the army only as "the estranged wife of a former Fort Hood Soldier," it is unclear how she is involved.
Although no further official information has as yet been released, social media posts name a variety of soldiers who "covered" for the murderer, one of whom may be the other suspect in custody.
It is also unclear whether or not the suspects and Vanessa's death are also somehow involved in the murder of Pvt. Gregory Wendel-Morales, whose remains were found within walking distance of Vanessa's.
Vanessa's remains were discovered with the help of witnesses, who came forward to report suspicious activity and a foul smell. Whoever buried Vanessa covered her body in concrete to keep in hidden. Only heavy rains and animal predation revealed her location.
"I want Fort Hood Army base shut down,” said Lupe, echoing her mother’s impassioned speech at an earlier press conference.
"If this could happen to my sister, this could happen to anyone else."
