"Por Ustedes Y Para Ustedes": Latina's Tweet Dedicating Degree To Migrant Laborer Parents Goes Viral
"POR USTEDES Y PARA USTEDES."
"Knowing they're out there in the hot sun kept me going and doing it for them," Anna Ocegueda tells NBC.
Anna Ocegueda, one of five siblings, is the first in her family to graduate from a four-year university, and she dedicates her achievement to parents, Mexican immigrants who have been picking fruit in Orange Grove, CA for over 25 years.
"My parents came here for a better future and a better life for their children. The educational opportunities weren’t great. My parents encouraged me to better my education so I wouldn’t have to work in the fields like them," Anna tells the Fresno Bee.
She recently tweeted a picture of herself dressed in her cap and gown, posing with her parents in the field. "Por ustedes y para ustedes," reads the tweet: Because of you and for you.
The post quickly went viral, resonating with thousands of people who have similar experiences, family histories, and incredible gratitude for the sacrifices their parents made to give them a better life.
Even the Chancellor of Anna's university, UC Merced, Dorothy Leland tweeted: “A powerful testament to what is possible with perseverance, hard work, and determination. Congratulations to you and your family. See you on the stage, Anna!”
Felicidades Anna, a ti y a tus padres, and to all the grads and their parents, working hard every single day para seguir adelante.
