Brown Is Beautiful: Yalitza Aparicio Named One Of People's Más Bellos

The Roma star continues to score increased visibility and validation for brown skin and indigenous people in Latin America.

Yalitza shared the cover of People en Español's 50 Más Bellos "Ola Latina" (Latin Wave) issue with Gina Rodriguez, Eiza Gonzalez, Kate del Castillo, and singer Natti Natasha.

Yalitza has been a trailblazer for indigenous women in Latin America and the world, becoming the first indigenous woman to grace the cover of Vogue Mexico and the first to ever be nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. She was recently named one of Time's Most Influential People, and she has done it all while enduring a constant stream of racist backlash, primarily from her own paisanos

Through it all, she continues to shine.

After her rocket rise to stardom as the lead in Alfonso Cuaron's Oscar-winning film Roma, Yalitza experienced an onslaught of nasty backlash, specifically from other mexicanos

Mexican actors famously ridiculed and plotted against her, echoing the sentiments of many in Mexico and Latin America who were not shy about posting derogatory comments about her skin color, social status, and indigenous origins.  But Yalitza has not let the negativity phase her.

When Sergio Goyri famously called her a "pinche india," Yalitza gracefully responded: "I’m proud of being an indigenous oaxaqueña, and it saddens me that there are people who don’t know the true meaning of the words."

Yalitza uses her position in the spotlight to help others, speaking out against racism and advocating for domestic workers.

She is truly una de las más bellas, inside and out. Bien merecido.
