Motel 6 will pay out $12M after illegally giving guest lists to ICE

“Motel 6′s actions tore families apart and violated the privacy rights of tens of thousands.”

Motel 6 has agreed to pay $12 million to settle a lawsuit filed by Washington state after it was discovered that the chain was illegally providing guest information to ICE.

"We send a report every morning to ICE," said an employee.

ICE used the information to target people with Latino-sounding last names, leading to guests across a number of locations being detained and/or deported.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a statement:

“Motel 6′s actions tore families apart and violated the privacy rights of tens of thousands.  Our resolution holds Motel 6 accountable for illegally handing over guests’ private information without a warrant.”

In an email, Motel 6 said that it is committed to enforcing guest privacy, which prohibits the sharing of guest information without a warrant, and that it will improve employee training and corporate oversight.
