This Latina Makes Customized "Welcome" Mats In Spanish

"Sin Tacos No Entras"

She saw a "Welcome" mat at her local craft store and thought, "Someone should make these in Spanish."

Sylvia, the Latina behind hand-painted tapete shop Knock Knock...Quien?, was inspired to start the company by her 16-year-old son.

The two were walking around Micheal's together when she saw a "Welcome" mat and commented to him that they should make the mats in Spanish.

"Latinos should have a mat to say "hola", "bienvenidos", or welcome your guest with something funny. There are so many quotes out there that us as Latinos say all the time, and they could be on a mat."

Her son responded, "Why don't you do it?"  "It's not out there yet. You will do amazing," he encouraged.  So she did, making the stencils and painting everything by hand.

"I wanted to show my son that anything is possible and to never give up."

But Sylvia is no stranger to hard work.  She started working in high school to help support her family and knows the importance of a good work ethic and providing for your family.

Fortunately, Sylvia's mom is able to help her whenever she gets behind.  "My mom has been my biggest supporter," she says.

Both Sylvia's parents are from Guadalajara, and, although she was born here, she spent part of her childhood in Guadalajara.

"Growing up in Mexico taught me all about my roots. It was the best time of my life."
