J Balvin Opens 2019 Grammy Awards This Sunday
Love it or hate it, reggaeton is putting Spanish-language music at the top of the mainstream charts.
J Balvin is nominated for Record of the Year for "I Like It" with Cardi B and Bad Bunny.
The Recording Academy has just announced that the Colombian reggaetonero will be opening the 61st Grammy Awards this Sunday night. Balvin is a two-time Latin Grammy Award winner, but this is his first Grammy nomination and performance.
Balvin was Spotify's No. 1 globally streamed Latin artist of 2018 (No. 4 overall), and his latest album, "Vibras," was the top Latin album of the year. "Mi Gente," the album's first single, has over 2.2 billion views on YouTube.
Previously, Latin artists could achieve mainstream success only with "crossover" albums in English, but Balvin's "Vibras" is entirely in Spanish. In an interview, Balvin said:
"We are defining a new mainstream."
