Border Wall GoFundMe Man May Have To Refund All The Money
...he may not have understood how "donating" money to the government works.
Brian Kolfage's border wall GoFundMe, "We The People Will Fund The Wall," has raised 15M so far. Unfortunately for the Florida Air Force vet and his 250,000 donors, "we the people" can't actually "fund the wall" via direct donation.
"The government has accepted large private donations before, most recently a billionaire donated $7.5 Million to fund half of the Washington Monument repairs in 2012; this is no different," Kolfage wrote on the campaign page.
Well, as it turns out, it is different. Money "gifted" to the government is just that, a gift. The person or persons who gave the gift don't get to decide what the receiver, in this case, the federal government, does with it.
Who does? Congress.
And Congress is not likely to use their gift money to fund such an incredibly expensive (Trump wants $5 BILLION) and ineffective project, especially when there are so many other programs and people in need. In fact, Trump just sent the government into a shutdown because Congress refused to approve funding for his wall.
Under GoFundMe's strict guidelines, all money collected must be used specifically for the campaign's stated purpose. Since Kolfage can't guarantee that the money will be used to build a border wall, he will most likely have to refund it.
"I feel deeply invested to this nation," writes Kolfage on the GoFundMe page. "Too many illegals are taking advantage of the United States taxpayers with no means of ever contributing to our society."
Guess what? Undocumented immigrants pay $11.6 BILLION in taxes EVERY YEAR. Undocumented taxes could pay for the border wall twice over, but, fortunately, they're paying for our social security and schools instead. You know, actually contributing to our society.
Even the Great Wall of China failed to keep out invaders and the Berlin Wall was fascist. If Kolfage or any of the people who donated were truly "invested" in this country, they would invest that money in projects and organizations that actually benefit our nation.
